House District 38

  • Incumbent: Rep. Elizabeth Ritter (D) (website)
  • Challenger: Brian Vachris (R)

  • Towns: Montville (part), Waterford
  • 2004 Margin of Victory: 6.61%
  • Notes: Waterford is trending GOP

Waterford elected a Republican First Selectman last fall when the independent First Selectman (who was allied with the local Republican party) retired and the seat became open. A Democrat has not held the office since 1999 - despite the fact that the Democrats have nearly a one thousand vote registration advantage in the town.

Rep. Ritter has been an active incumbent in the area of constituent service. She has also served on the Energy Committee (Waterford is the home of the Millstone nuclear plant) and has a good command of the issues.

Brian Vachris is the chairman of the local Republican party. He also works in the energy field. He has been a candidate for state office before, running for the 38th District seat in 2002 against the previous incumbent. He is well known around the district from his prior race and from his service on the local Board of Finance and RTM.

Both candidates are known for their aggressive campaigning and for their technical knowledge of the issues, so this race should be eagerly contested.
